Voor de muziekmakers en producers onder ons een leuk filmpje over de studio van een van Nederlands beste producers: Nicolay. De man achter de muziek van onder meer The Foreign Exchange showt zijn assortiment aan instrumenten en laat zien welke computerprogramma’s hij gebruikt voor zijn drums.

Nieuw Foreign Exchange album in oktober 2010!

Na het succes van de eerste 2 Foreign Exchange albums hebben Nicolay&Phonte aangekondigd dit najaar een nieuw FE album uitbrengen. Het derde album van het Nederlands/Amerikaanse duo krijgt de naam ‘Authenticity’ en zal op 12 oktober in de winkel liggen.

Veel meer over het album is nog niet bekend maar we gaan er vanuit dat ook de vaste crewleden Darien Brockington, Zo! en YahZarah op ‘Authenticity’ te horen zullen zijn. Uiteraard zal QT je op de hoogte houden rond de ontwikkelingen van een van onze favoriete groepen.

QT interviewt ‘YahZarah’!

Met de release van ‘The Ballad Of Purple St. James’ op 4 Mei 2010, luiden we met dit interview de ‘YahZarah-week’ in.
Vandaag het interview, woensdag de albumrecensie en vrijdag bieden we je de kans door middel van een prijsvraag omhet album te winnen.
Behalve dat wij YahZarah al lange tijd volgen, ze stond zelfs op onze eerst cd-release ‘The Quality Time Promo Album’, ging er voor deze week ook extra interesse uit naar de producties die zijn gedaan door ‘ons-eigen-vaderlands-trots’ producer Nicolay.

QT:
It’s been a while since the last time we’ve talked to each other. (Sounds like the first line of a lovesong….)
The track ‘Last 2 Leave’ was featured on our Quality Time Promo Album in 2008.
I remember you were working very hard to release you album that period.
For how long have you been working on this album?

YahZarah:
Yes, that does sound like the first line of a love song…Don’t sue me if I use it…lol
I have been working on the “Ballad” since spring of 06. And there have been at least three versions of it before I signed on to complete it with Nic and Phonte’. Really wanted to come back hard, and I was willing to wait to get it right. That’s why I put out “The Prelude” in 08 to reintroduce myself while taking my time to create something that really represented who I and my music are about. And when Phonte Nic and I started working on it’s latest incarnation it was a chance to take my creativity and writing to another level. So I was willing to wait a little longer to release it. And now it’s ready…

QT:
What part of the whole process costs the most time?

YahZarah:
All of it…
From the creative process to the story to the track listing. Then the magic really happens as you start to mix the album and pull the very best out of it.
When a records mixed well, the listener can really hear the love and work you put into it… And I bad mix can change everything. Next, you have the image.
Which is equally as important because the music and the image tell the world who you are in a (photo, video, cd cover ect.)
So you better make sure what you want to say to the world, is clear in the image. Gotta get that right, or you might be stuck with being perceived as someone your not.
And once that’s out there, it can be very hard to change…

QT:
Could you please tell us more about the album?

YahZarah:
The “Ballad of Purple St. James” is a fearless,bad ass project. I’m telling stories about the usual loving, losing, and finding love.
But also learning not to give a damn about what the world thinks, all the fun in between. 
Of course I worked on the bulk of the album with Nicolay and Phonte. But, it also includes production from TheRealFocus…(Marsha Ambrosius, Raphael Saadiq),Nate Smith (Michael Jackson), Steve Mckie & Tone Whitfield (Bilal, Jill Scott) , Zo!, and guest appearances from Darien Brockington, Jaspects, and Lil’ John Roberts

QT:
Can you also share with me the process when you are making a record, producing a record, the thought process and the work you put in from start to finish, basically just an overview of it?

YahZarah:
I simply start recording songs and see what story starts to form then I build from there. I also look for producers with ideas that will challenge and stretch me vocally and lyrically. That’s where people like Phonte’ and Nic come in. Once I start to hear a theme I build around that story and it becomes my project and I record until I feel like the story has been told.
But really I don’t have a method. I work very organically

QT:
If you compare this album to your first album, what are the differences?

YahZarah:
My first project “Hear Me” I was writing purely for the joy of making music. I still had to bring myself to someone else’s idea of who I was musically. But, was still able to bring a great deal of myself to the music. And the label and I didn’t agree on business but we met in the middle at least on the subject creativity. I was still finding my voice at the time.
“Black Star” my second album, I call the “corporate album” And I fought to get songs from my lesser known project “Hear Me” placed on that record, so that my identity wouldn’t be completely phased out of the music. My idea’s about my songs and image greatly clashed with the idea of the label’s. My music, and look was their vision even down to the videos. And it was really hard to bounce back after that…. Because I was so removed from the identity that had me singing under.
But with the “Ballad” I was really fortunate that I was working was a team that respects what I have to give. But, is all about quality control, and challenged me from melody to cadence to find the right story. I believe that it can be heard in the music we created together. Something that’s also different about this project is that I had full say so on the direction of my image. Sink or swim what you got is who I am…. And that brings me a whole lot of joy…

QT:
What’s it like working with Nicolay?

YahZarah:
He is a gentle giant, his heart is as big as his talent.  I feel like we understand one another musically, he’s always finding new ways to blast past the last bar he set.
He is always seeking to top himself and encourage the best from the folks he’s working with. And it’s very fluid not forced…. Gotta love that right

What does Quality Time mean to you?

YahZarah:
Hemmmm, that means many things to me but what stands out is, always seeking to do things at the hight.  To take things a little deeper not just scratch the surface.
And make all things you are a part of excellent by paying attention to perfecting them… That’s YahZarah’s idea of Quality Time

Nicolay is met The Foreign Exchange genomineerd voor een Grammy Award! The Foreign Exchange is genomineerd in de categorie ‘Best Urban/Alternative Performance’ voor het nummer ‘Daykeeper’,
afkomstig van de plaat ‘Leave It All Behind’. Als Nicolay de Grammy Award ook daadwerkelijk in ontvangst mag nemen, is hij de eerste Nederlander die deze prijs mag ontvangen.

QT-Top 10 van het Muziekjaar 2009 (Nrs.2-10)

Het jaar 2009 loopt bijna ten einde en 2010 staat dus alweer voor de deur. In het algemeen was 2009 een interessant jaar. Ook op het gebied van muziek. Nieuwe releases, oude artiesten die eindelijk per een opvolger kwamen, tegenvallend releases, alles zat er in. QT heeft een aantal bekende Nederlandse artiesten naar hun Top albums van 2009 gevraagd. Dit samen met de lijst van de QT-Online crew vormt een algehele Top10 voor muziekjaar 2009. En wij gaan nu voor jullie aftellen van 10 naar 1.

2. Lee Fields & the Expressions – My World

Als je je goed voelt bij de rits retro-platen die Duffy, Raphael Saadiq en Amy Winehouse hebben uitgebracht, zal je ook geen problemen hebben met “My World”. De set is 11 tracks sterk en luistert in één setting weg. Uitstekende Funk en Soul waarbij je je afvraagt, waarom je dit niet eerder hebt ontdekt. Uitschieters op deze eigenlijk al uitstekende plaat zijn “Money I$ King”, “Honey Dove”, “These Moments” en “Last Ride”. Een hele goede aanrader voor hen die de Funk en Deep Soul missen in today’s world of music.

3. Eric Roberson – Music Fan First

Enerzijds verrast Erro de fan met nieuwe sounds, nieuwe eclectic beats, anderzijds is het ook de verwachting van de fan die wil dat Erro elke keer weer het wiel opnieuw uitvindt. Geen rare hersenspinsels ala Timbaland op deze plaat, maar genoeg om de plaat interessant te houden. Niet denken dat je nu een experimentele plaat ala Ziggy Stardust voorgeschoteld krijgt: een plaat van Eric Roberson is altijd een Soul plaat. En dat is een goed ding. Highly recommended.

4. Mayer Hawthorne – A Strange Arrangement

Uw QT-reviewer was niet al te positief over deze soulplaat van Mayer Hawthorne. Maar deze mening was niet aan de rest toegedicht. Zij waren allemaal wél positief over de plaat. Daarom kreeg deze soul-revival plaat in de gedachte van Smokey Robinson & the Miracles toch erg veel stemmen.

5. Joe – Signature

Dit is toch wel een zeer opvallende notering. Vooral voor ons als QT-team. Want geen van ons had dit album in zijn top staan. Juist door de lijstjes van de andere artiesten en samenwerkende organisaties is dit album zo hoog gekomen. Misschien toch eens tijd dat wij van QT hier ook een recensie van gaan maken.

6. Nicolay – City Lights, Vol. 2: Shibuya

Nicolay is de Nederlandse trots in onze eindlijst. Hij is de hoogst geëindigde Nederlander hier. Samen met Winne hield hij Neerlands eer hoog.
Met “City Lights, Vol. 2: Shibuya” presteert Nicolay het wederom een product af te leveren dat en herkenbaar en vernieuwend is. Het is tevens een nieuwe bewijs dat Nicolay so much more is dan een Soulful Hip Hop producer, “City Lights, Vol. 2″ is een allround music product. Misschien met een soulful sausje, maar geen enkele track lijkt op elkaar. Er is ook geen throwback naar ouder werk van Nicolay, wat voor sommige fans een gemis kan zijn. Echter, als je progressief van instelling bent, dan is “City Lights, Vol. 2″ een welkome aanvulling op je muziekcollectie.

7. Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3

Jay-Z stopte, kwam weer terug, stopte weer en kwam in 2009 ook weer terug. Blueprint 3 was de (niet al te originele) titel van dit album. Een album waar de dame uit nummer 8 ook een nootje op meezingt. Het is een album geworden dat voor productioneel gelouterd wordt. En dat Jay-Z nog steeds spitsvondig over kan komen bewijst hij ook weer.

8. Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom

Een opvallende nummer 8 in onze eindlijst. Dit laatste album van Alicia Keys is namelijk nog maar een weekje uit. Desondanks toch een album dat al snel gewaardeerd is door QT-crew en de overige Nederlandse muzikale stemmers. Een album waarin Alicia toch meer ingetogen zingt en waar de producties juist wat meer aanwezig zijn. Meer ballads dan normaal en wederom erg Alicia Keys.

9. Winne – Winne Zonder Strijd

Mocht je hem kopen voor de bangers kom je bedrogen uit, want daar staan er maar een paar van op. Maar sta je open voor meer is dit wel een aanrader.Winne overtuigt namelijk met zijn album uit 2009. Nederland heeft er weer een hiphoptopper bij!

10. India.Arie – Testimony Volume 2: Love & Politics

Voor India.Arie was 2009 het jaar van de release van haar tweede hoofdstuk in het Testimony drieluik. Dit keer ging de aandacht uit naar Love & Politics. Het werd een warme cd met vele invloeden uit muziek van over de gehele wereld. India.Arie is sterk als altijd en overtuigt alweer met deze vierde cd.
