Bilal Sayeed Oliver, kortweg Bilal, is een bijzondere jazz/nu soul-artiest. Met zijn klassiek getrainde falsettostem verleidt Bilal, die geboren en getogen is in Philadelphia, iedere luisteraar. Zijn eerste album ‘1st Born Second’ (geproduceerd door onder andere Raphael Saadiq en Dr. Dre) kwam uit in 2001 en liet een ongelooflijk veelzijdige artiest horen. Op het tweede album ‘Love For Sale’ werkte hij samen met onder andere Dr. Dre en J. Dilla. Dit album verscheen nooit officieel bij een platenmaatschappij en is alleen maar te downloaden mede hierdoor is dit album een heuse undergroundklassieker geworden. Voor 2010 staat een nieuwe release gepland ‘Air Tight’s Revenge’ een mix van soul, rock en elektronica met stevige wortels in de jazz.

Het nieuwe album ‘Airtight’s Revenge’ staat voor 14 September 2010 gepland!

18 Juli 2010 staat hij in RoTown Rotterdam bij Strange Fruit, maar 14 September ligt eindelijk zijn nieuwe album in de winkels!

Grammy-nominated neo-soul singer Bilal released his seminal debut ‘1st Born Second’ nearly a decade ago, but after label entanglements and years of being relegated to guest appearances on others’ songs, he’s finally getting a second shot. The falsetto crooner has signed a deal with Plug Research Music to release his highly anticipated follow-up, ‘Airtight’s Revenge,’ set for released on September 14.

While fans may expect the same sort of cushy soul grooves found on his debut, the Philly native expanded his musical horizons for the album. “It’s a mix of jazz, hip-hop, soul, blues, and experimental free music,” he said, noting tracks like ‘Who R U,’ ‘Robots’ and ‘Little Ones’ were inspired by the 2007 documentary ‘Zeitgeist: The Movie,’ socio-economic issues and his sons, respectively.

‘Airtight’s Revenge’ sees co-producer Steve McKie (Jill Scott, Estelle) helping Bilal out behind the boards for the entirety of the project, while producers Nottz (Kanye West, Drake), 88-Keys (Mos Def, Musiq Soulchild), Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra (Erykah Badu, John Legend) and Tone Whitefield lend their talents to a few other tracks on the album.

Since ‘1st Born Second’ debuted back in 2001, during the height of the neo-soul movement, the album has sold upwards of 300,000 copies. The album spawned the singles ‘Fast Lane’ featuring Jadakiss and ‘Soul Sista,’ cementing Bilal, full name Bilal Sayeed Oliver, as one of the premier artists of the neo-soul movement.

Bilal planned to release his sophomore album ‘Love For Sale,’ a more experimental work than its predecessor, back in 2006, but was put on ice when his label Interscope Records indefinitely shelved the project after deeming the album unmarketable. Since then, he’s lent his vocals to songs by Solange, Scarface, Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Clipse and Common, among others. Welcome back, Bilal.

Zondag 18 juli Strange Fruit & WATT Present: Bilal

Onze collega’s van WATT dienen hun pand op last van de lokale overheid grootschalig te verbouwen, waarbij alle concerten van deze zomer verplaatst worden naar alternatieve locaties. Het geplande optreden van Bilal vindt nu doorgang bij ons in Rotown, wat vanzelfsprekend geen onbekend terrein is voor de jongens van Strange Fruit. Bilal Sayeed Oliver maakt deel uit van het Soulquarians collectief, samen met artiesten als Mos Def, Q-Tip, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson en Erykah Badu. Voor laatstgenoemde produceerde hij het album ‘Mama’s Gun’, maar werkte ook samen met o.a. Jill Scott en Guru’s Jazzmatazz. Zijn eerste soloalbum ‘1st Born Second’ werd geproduceerd door Dr. Dre en Raphael Saadiq, waarbij Bilal’s neo soul en jazzinvloeden worden verrijkt met elementen van hiphop. De verwachtingen voor het binnenkort te verschijnen derde album ‘Air Tight’s Revenge’ zijn inmiddels hooggespannen. Samen met zijn band krijgen we hier vanavond alvast een voorproefje op. Tickets zijn verkrijgbaar via Rotown’s verkoopkanalen, reeds gekochte kaarten blijven uiteraard geldig.

Leuk nieuws, zo vlak voor het weekend!
Billboard.com komt met het nieuws dat Bilal met een nieuw album komt. Heel erg lang hoeven we er misschien niet meer op te wachten want de release staat gepland voor begin 2010!

Sinds zijn laatste release ‘1st Born Second’ in 2001, heeft Bilal geen officieel album meer uitgebracht.
Zijn geplande album ‘Love For Sale’ heeft nooit een officiele release gekend en is ‘gewoon’te downloaden via links op het net. Eeuwig zonde, want dit album is een klassieker dat ik graag in fysieke vorm in mijn CD-kast had willen hebben.

Het nieuwe album zal door Bilal’s nieuw gevonden label ‘Plug Research’worden uitgebracht waar ook de artiesten Exile, Flying Lotus, Shafiq Husayn, Om’Mas Keithhun thuisbasis hebben gevonden. Producers: Bilal, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA Creative Partners) en Nottz (Kanye West, Snoop Dogg). Het label omschrijft het album als: “A hybrid between Soul,
Rock and Electronica, Bilal’s album is scheduled for a 2010 first quarter release”.
